This year’s May Day celebration is marred by an unprecedented poverty, war and misery across the world. The unbridled capitalists are playing with the fate of the billions of people. At the same time the great battalion of the working class, without whose labour the world grinds to a halt, remains silent before onslaught of capital.
This is not acceptable. The declaration of May Day 150 years ago heralded the end of this inaction. The call for an end to this situation, the call for class unity must be echoed by every working person all over the world.
Without the labour of the workers the capitalists, their class and state are doomed. Without the labour of the working class the capitalists are incapable of waging any wars; cannot bomb towns and villages and destroy homes. The capitalist world survives on the labour of the working class and wage slavery. May Day must evoke this simple self-awareness for the working class.
The celebration of May Day is an exhilarating event that can demonstrate the power of the working class. By putting down their tools the workers can declare their strongest denunciation of the capitalists. This occasion can, more than any other occasion, bring the working class together in a show of solidarity, and remind itself of its power.
May Day can and should be a day that the working class across the world rises up against those responsible for creating this misery. May Day can and should be an occasion for the world working class to declare its intention to put an end to despair, destitution and war and declare that it is determined to build a better world!
In the past year the Iranian society was witnessed to an ongoing and constant battle between the workers, radical students and masses of deprived people with the Iranian authorities and the capitalists. Building on the gains and advances of last year, bigger and better gatherings and rallies, will be the order of the day. The pre-emptive actions of the security forces to stifle the efforts of the organisers of the May Day is in itself an indication of the extent of the potential of the anti-capitalist movement.
As we approach the May Day a number of the labour leaders and students activists are still in jail. Thanks to a massive international campaign Mahmoud Salehi, a restected labour activist and the organiser of May Day rallies, was earlier this month released. But the leader of the Tehran Bus Drivers Syndicate- Mansour Ossanlou and the student activists Farhad Hajmirzaie, Ali Kantoori and Payman Piran are in prison and need our support.
